Darlington Assistance for Refugees organises weekly drop-in sessions for sanctuary seekers and refugees. These sessions occur every Friday afternoon from 10 am to 12:30 pm and offer opportunities for people to catch up, connect, seek advice and get help. Volunteers who wish to help with these sessions are welcome.
Engage in conversation, listen, help with the English language and form-filling, make teas and coffees, prepare food, help with the free shop, disseminate and explain information from the leisure coordinator and others.
Skills: have the confidence to initiate conversations and a willingness to help, patience, empathy, and listening to understand rather than respond. Open and interested in different cultures. Ability to correct English in an unobtrusive and light-hearted way. Understanding English, the experience of teaching ESL or another MFL. Be reliable and caring, and understand the needs and dignity of sanctuary seekers.
When: two to three hours weekly, Fridays, 10 am to 12:00 pm.
