Literacy support for young children in the home, including reading stories and playing with children. Reading stories in English helps develop literacy skills, vocabulary acquisition and fluency.

Homework support

Homework support for secondary school pupils in the home. This is not specialist tuition, but the kind of support native English-speaking parents give their children.

Skills: Understanding the English language, patience and probably some experience supporting young people.

When: Two hours per week (flexible)

Language tutor

Language tutor for the programme of support for people seeking sanctuary

Skills: Experience in teaching ESOL or MFL/ ability to improvise and adapt to learners’ needs

When: Two hours per week, two sessions each term (Thursday morning or evening)

School orientation programme

The programme aims to make it easier for children of all ages to manage the transition into school in the UK by introducing them to ‘how things work’ on a practical level, looking at expectations and supporting school-related language acquisition.

Skills: Experience working with children and young people. Knowledge of the UK education system would be helpful but not essential, as would experience teaching ESOL or MFL.

When: Two days per month (Monday and Tuesday)

Conversation group

Skills: Understanding of the English language, patience, empathy, interest in exchanging ideas

When: Two hours per week

Informal language development

Supporting language development informally at drop-ins.

Skills: Understanding of the English language, patience, empathy, interest in exchanging ideas

When: 3 hours per week (Mondays and Fridays)
